I know somebody who is or will be in brief in a situation of homelessness. What can I do? First of all, you need to get in contact with social services in your municipality. In the city of Barcelona, this is Centre de Dia de l’Avinguda Meridiana, núm.197, tel. 93 408 45 43 (Monday to Friday, 9h to 20h ). You can also call the free phone number of Urgències Socials: 900 70 30 30.
If the person is permanently on the streets and you have seen them there for a long time, you can call Fundació Arrels, tel. 93 441 29 90 (Monday to Friday 10h a 14h and 16h a 20h) or fill in the form of our online service The Locator.
Can you help me financially if I am homeless? The demands that we receive are not strictly financial. We implement individualised work with each person and the financial aid are framed withing a wider social work plan.
I would like information on the problem of homelessness. You can check our section on Homeless people. There you will find a general description of the phenomenon and, amongst other things, a list of documents and links to organisations working on with this collective.
ABOUT ARRELS Who are you? We are a private foundation that has been in contact with more than 6,000 people since 1987. Currently we have 40 workers and 229 volunteers.
What do you do exactly? Arrels focuses on homeless people who are in a chronic stage of life in the streets. The attention is done through different programmes and public sensitivisation.
How are you funded? With contributions from members and donors, donations from private citizens and businesses and subsidies from public administration (Ajuntament de Barcelona, Generalitat de Catalunya and Ministerio de Asuntos Sociales).
Are you a religious organisation? No. We are a laicist organisation, but the origins of Arrels are rooted in christian communities, and a third of the members of the board are elected by the Provincial Council of the Jesuits. Some volunteers and some people that support us, do so out of confessional experiences, others do so without any religious background. Both groups support us out of belief in solidarity and human values.
