Have you thought about the importance of having it? All around us, many people take shelter in the streets, in the rooms of homeless shelters and hotels. This is the context for the year 2010, which marks the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. In the coming years, the European Union should work hard to achieve the end of homelessness by 2015. We are launching this campaign to raise awareness so that all of us can put a roof over Barcelona.
Why this campaign?
• Because in Barcelona that are more than 2,000 people that literally live in the street. In order to survive, these people depend directly on social services from the government or the private sector.
• Because we demand that the fight against poverty be an economic priority and that it incorporate a social vision that includes education, health, employment and housing.
• Because in 2010 we will celebrate the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and the member states should agree upon effective economic and social measures to support the 79 million people living in poverty in the European Union.
• Because the Spanish government will take on the Presidency of the European Union during the first semester of the Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. Its challenge will be to include the most vulnerable people, guaranteeing them minimum economic resources and quality social services.
• Because in 2015 there should not be anyone sleeping in the streets of our cities, here or in the rest of the European Union. We should honor the commitment of the European Union to put an end to homelessness in the coming years.
